Listed here are miscellaneous annuals that I do not have a page dedicated to. Due to space, or lack there of, and wanting more return for my money, I do not grow a lot of annuals. Most of the ones I do grow are self-sowing. Those that are not are easily grown from seed or cutting or can be overwintered.
Consolida ambigua
common name Rocket Larkspur POISONOUS! full sun self-sows May-September bloom A lady I worked for told me there was a bunny head inside every larkspur flower. Look closely. The ones pictured that do not are 'Giant Imperial Mix'. Larkspur do self-seed freely, so I have to weed them out freely. |

Dolichos lablab
common name Hyacinth Bean Vine POISONOUS SEEDS! full sun August-October bloom In some cultures, the beans are eaten, but I believe there is a special preparation process. They are grown as simply as pole beans are. |

|
Ipomoea quamoclit
common names include Cypress Vine, Hummingbird Vine, Star Glory POISONOUS! full to partial sun self-sows August-October bloom The dainty red flowers look especially nice when allowed to mingle with Clematis or another flower. Self-seeds and grows a little to freely; I may not allow it to come back. |

Oxalis vulcanicola ‘Zinfandel’
common name Volcanic Sorrel perennial in zones 9-11; annual elsewhere full to partial sun self-sows June-September bloom I got a start of this years ago, and now it comes up everywhere. Will probably eventually eradicate it. |

Poppies may be perennial or annual, depending upon the variety, but all will self-sow if allowed to. They add bold color to the garden in spring and most die back in the heat of summer. I have a variety of poppies throughout the garden, perennial and annual, and they have cross pollinated to make some very interesting new plants. Care must be taken to assure they don't all end up looking alike over time. The seed heads can be used in dried flower arrangements.
They are very difficult to transplant, so it is easiest to propagate them by seed. Plant seed in the late fall to early spring as they require stratification (cold treatment). Poppies require full sun and are drought and poor soil tolerant. Click here for perennial varieties of Papaver. |
