Heuchera, Heucherella & Tiarella
|
The longer I have gardened, the more I have come to appreciate foliage. Flowers are nice, but unless you spend time and money on annuals, they mostly only last a few weeks, and frequently require full sun. Foliage, however, lasts for most of three seasons, and Heucheras provide a range of colors for shade. By varying foliage colors and textures, more interest can be created in the garden than by flowers alone, and the combined plants playing off of each other will look more attractive than either one alone. |
Heucheras, commonly known as Alum Root or Coral Bells, have a bad reputation amongst some gardeners since they can be a bit finicky. In the rush to release new varieties, many are not given a long enough trial period. In the correct conditions however, most can thrive. Purple and green varieties are the easiest to grow.
Closely related to Heuchera is Tiarella, or foam flower. Hybridizers have crossed the two to produce a plant called Heucherella, also known as foamy bells. The lighter forms of Heucherellas can be more difficult to grow than Heucheras.
