This page is for miscellaneous perennials, including bulbs, that I do not have a page dedicated to. The bloom times listed span from the earliest the individual plant has begun to bloom through the latest it has continued to bloom in my garden; it does not necessarily bloom the entire time. Though I occasionally allow a few seed-heads to form, deadheading (removing spent blooms) prolongs blooming and uses less of the plant's store of energy. In propagating perennials from seed, many require stratification (a cold period); winter seed starting is generally effective.

Poppies may be perennial or annual, depending upon the variety, but all will self-sow if allowed to. They add bold color to the garden in spring and most die back in the heat of summer. I have a variety of poppies throughout the garden, perennial and annual, and they have cross pollinated to make some very interesting new plants. Care must be taken to assure they don't all end up looking alike over time. The seed heads can be used in dried flower arrangements.
They are very difficult to transplant, so it is easiest to propagate them by seed. Plant seed in the late fall to early spring as they require stratification (cold treatment). Poppies require full sun and are drought and poor soil tolerant.

Old fashioned Phlox is hardy and easy to grow, but something I have found is that, in a rush to put out new varieties, they are not being proven. I have bought so many varieties of Phlox through the years that struggled and died in the first or second year. Even putting them in a prized location did nothing for them. My recommendation is, unless you have money to spare and like a challenge, stick with tried and true varieties. Phlox is easily propagated by division.
To help prevent powdery mildew on Phlox paniculata, thin out the smaller stems early in the season. This gives more air circulation and more energy goes to those left, prolonging bloom time.
Phlox subulata could be used as a ground cover in larger areas.

common name Chinese Mayapple perennial in zones 6-8 full to partial shade I purchased this in 2017 under the assurance of the nursery owner and influence of my husband. After it did not come up last year, I counted it as a casualty. As I was pulling the tag this spring (2019), planting a new plant in the space and cleaning the surrounding area, I noticed it coming up under a Hosta about a foot away. It looks happy in its own selected location, so I'll leave it be as it establishes. |
